Let Your Garden Bloom Wild

Premium wildflower seed mixes, perennial meadow blends, and lawn grass seeds — carefully curated for breathtaking flowering landscapes, season after season.

Nature-Inspired Landscapes, Grown From Seed

At Rainbowelmmeadow, we believe every garden holds the potential for a vibrant meadow. Founded in 2018 by a collective of horticulturists and landscape designers, our mission is simple: restore beauty and biodiversity to gardens across Japan, one seed packet at a time.

We don't just sell seeds — we partner with you to transform ordinary plots into thriving ecosystems. Our in-house seed experts travel throughout Japan and beyond, sourcing only the finest wildflower and grass varieties, testing each for germination vigour, purity, and seasonal performance. Every packet is rooted in science and passion.

Whether you dream of a cottage border alive with poppies and cornflowers, a dense low-maintenance lawn, a full perennial meadow for pollinators, or a drought-resistant tapestry suited to Japan's warming climate, we have the right blend. We've spent years understanding local microclimates, soil conditions, and aesthetic traditions — and we've matched that knowledge to our seed selection.

A Meadow Is Good for Your Garden — and the Planet

Choosing meadow over lawn reduces mowing, chemical use, and water consumption — while creating rich habitat for native wildlife.

  • Low Maintenance

Established meadows require just one cut per year, versus a lawn's weekly mowing — saving time, fuel, and noise pollution. Your garden essentially gardens itself, year after year. Less time pushing a mower, more time enjoying the view.

  • Drought Tolerant

Deep-rooted wildflowers access soil moisture unavailable to shallow turf grasses — surviving dry spells without irrigation. Perfect for Japan's hot summers; your meadow actually thrives in heat that would stress a conventional lawn. Saves water, saves money.

  • Wildlife Habitat

A single square metre of wildflowers can support dozens of insect species — bees, butterflies, hoverflies, beetles. Meadows restore urban biodiversity that monoculture lawns destroy. Your garden becomes a thriving ecosystem, a refuge for pollinators in Japan's increasingly developed landscape.

Ask a Question
In most parts of Japan, early spring (March–April) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal sowing windows. Autumn sowing mimics natural seed fall, giving seeds a cold stratification period for stronger spring germination.
For wildflower mixes, we recommend 2–3 grams per square metre on prepared ground. Our 50g packs cover approximately 20–25 square metres. Lawn grass blends are sown at a higher rate — 30–35g per square metre.
Yes — this is the single most important step. Remove existing vegetation and weeds, loosen the top 5 cm of soil and rake to a fine tilth. Wildflowers actually prefer low-fertility soil, so avoid adding compost or fertiliser to the seedbed.
Absolutely. Our Rainbow Annual Mix and Butterfly Garden Mix work beautifully in large containers, window boxes, and rooftop planters. Use a peat-free compost and ensure adequate drainage. We offer a specific balcony blend — ask us for details.
We back every product with our germination guarantee. If your seeds fail to perform as described, contact us within 90 days of purchase with a brief description and we will send a replacement pack at no charge.
Rooftop meadow garden in Tokyo with wildflowers in bloom

From Empty Roof to Tokyo's Most Photographed Balcony

When Mika K. inherited her grandmother's 200-square-metre Tokyo rooftop, it was bare concrete surrounded by air-conditioning units. She envisioned a healing garden space but wasn't sure where to start. We matched her with three complementary mixes: our Rainbow Annual Mix for instant spring colour, the Butterfly Garden Mix for summer pollinators, and our special Balcony Shade Blend for a sheltered corner.

Using our detailed preparation guide, she cleared the space, added 5cm of peat-free compost, and sowed in early March. Within eight weeks, the rooftop had transformed — neighbours started asking questions, and by July, friends were requesting cuttings and seed recommendations. The space now hosts a monthly community garden meetup and has become an oasis for urban biodiversity in central Tokyo.

“It's honestly therapeutic. Every morning I sit up there with coffee and watch the bees. I never thought a rooftop could feel so alive.”

— Mika K., Tokyo
